Obituary of Doreen Helen Scheuer

It is with heavy hearts that Harry and his family announce the passing of their beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She passed away peacefully at South Country Village in Medicine Hat at the age of 84 years with Harry by her side. Doreen was born on July 10, 1936 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan to parents Benjamin and Meta Rempel, and older brothers Bruce (Virginia) and Cecil (Jeanette). Their family grew with the addition of 4 more daughter's, June Stuart, Evelyn (Vern) Debord, Shirley Rempel and Susan Rempel. Doreen's father Ben, worked for the Canadian National Railway as Station Master, so growing up she lived in many different railway stations and towns throughout Saskatchewan. After high school, Doreen moved to Weyburn Saskatchewan to train as a psychiatric nurse and graduated with a diploma in psych nursing from the Saskatchewan Hospital in Weyburn. Doreen loved her chosen profession and was proud of the many ""cutting edge"" mental health treatments trialed there in the late 50's. It was at the hospital that Doreen met Harry, who also took psych nursing in Weyburn and he quickly became the love of her life. Doreen and Harry were married in Weyburn on April 29th, 1957 and enjoyed 63 years devoted to each other. Their first two children Donna and Lily were born in Weyburn. Doreen and Harry moved to Calgary once Doreen completed her training where Harry ran a small grocery store. Their two sons, Garth and Mark were born in Calgary, completing their family. In 1963 when Mark was only a few months old, during a December blizzard they moved to Oyen to run their store, H & H Red and White Groceteria. Doreen was an exceptional wife, who loved gardening, reading, knitting, a good crossword puzzle and shopping. Her Mennonite heritage always shone around the dinner table, she made fantastic German Pancakes, Wareneki and Schmaundt Fat, Holupschi, Chicken Noodle Soup with Star Anise, Cabbage Borscht, Beet Borscht, Cinnamon Buns and Angel Buns which family and friends loved. Doreen always had a coffee ready for the steady stream of friends and family Harry invited in. She loved geography, history and to travel and who was known to share many valuable snippets of history and geographical knowledge whenever she traveled. Most beautiful was the way she turned many an eye as she carried herself with such grace, such poise and such dignity. Doreen was a Past Worthy Matron and long time member of the Serenity Chapter #113 Order of the Eastern Star. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 63 years Harry, her daughter Donna Scheuer, and her sons Dustin, Duncan (Jenny) and step-son David along with grand-children Alex, Josh, Aubrey, Wesley, Austin, Summer and Zander; her daughter Lily (Clinton) Steinley and their sons Jason (Marisa), Chris (Jen) and their grand-children Sidnee (Brandon), Jake, Milo, Elliot and Everett, great granddaughter Wren; her son Garth (Connie) and her son Mark (Michelle).
