Obituary of Hugh Fredrick Allen

Hugh Fredrick Allen passed away peacefully July 31, 2025 at the Big Country Hospital in Oyen, AB.

Born August 12, 1935, Hugh was raised in Flaxcombe, SK one of 5 children born to parents Charlie and Caral Allen.

At the age of 16, Hugh got a job sweeping floors at Jardine Equipment in Flaxcombe where he later became a mechanic. He eventually took over the business in 1980 establishing Allen’s Agrocenter in Oyen.

In 1955 he married his one and only love Audrey Adams.

In 1962 Hugh and Audrey along with children Ardene and Perry moved their house and followed the Jardines to Oyen. They then built a new home and in 1963, daughter Leslie Ann joined the family. Hugh was a pillar in the community, was honoured with citizen of the year. He was an active member of the Kinsmen Club, K 40’s, Mason’s, Eastern Star and the volunteer fire department where he served as Fire Chief for several years.

Hugh was most proud (even though he never spoke of it) of his involvement and guidance with the construction of the golf course. He was definitely the main organizer of all the donated community labor and equipment which drastically reduced the cost of the massive undertaking. He avidly golfed into his mid eighties. During his years at the Oyen Lodge he participated in many social activities.

One of Hugh’s favorite things to do was to watch his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in their various activities. He spent many hours in hockey arenas as well as around the table playing cards. In his later years he always looked forward to his weekly poker games with the boys.

Hugh and Audrey enjoyed traveling to several countries as well as many camping trips closer to home. In the early 90’s they started spending winters in Arizona. Hugh was a member of slow pitch teams including the Desert Dinosaurs. They loved their weekly dances and the many happy hours he and Audrey took part in. He usually finished his day in the community hot tub chatting to people.

Hugh was the backbone of his family and will be greatly missed by his daughter Ardene (Duff) Carroll; his son Perry Allen (Monica); daughter Leslie Srogen (Alex); seven grandchildren Jeffrey (Robin) Holmans and their children Keaton, Libby and Brenner;  Denelle (Jamie) Cutler and their children Brinn and Colton; Jared (Karen) Holmans and their children Jordis, Taylor and Hunter; Charles (Brittany) Allen and their two boys Kaleb and Bowen; Kayle Srogen, Cassidy Srogen (Kyle Sabraw); Joanne Rodwell and her family.

Hugh was predeceased by his wife Audrey in March 2019, his daughter-in-law Kathy Allen and granddaughter Quincie Srogen, both in 2022.

Hugh was very well cared for in his final days by the nurses and doctors at the Oyen Hospital. When asked how he was doing his answer was almost always “I’ve got no complaints”.

A life well lived Papa Hughie.
